Stretch Marks Scars - How to Deal with them?

Stretch marks scars are common in both the sexes and do not cause any medical complications. More than one in every 2 persons living now has been affected by stretch marks at some point or the other. Stretch marks like everyone knows by now occur when the center layer of skin called as dermis, has to stretch more than its range. The connective fibers along the skin actually break down and the dermis eventually loses its elasticity. The production of collagen is hampered in these ways which lead to scarring. This scarring is visible on the upper layer of skin (epidermis).

Appearance of Stretch Marks

Newly formed stretch marks appear as pink, brown or even reddish lines which with time change to have a pale or whitish tint. Considering people of all races, one thing can be comfortably said that stretch marks tend to fade slowly and steadily and eventually these lines end up looking like lighter versions of your skin. There are certain color variations in some people depending on their genetics but in the long run, the marks would appear some shades lighter than their skin color.

Both men and women can get stretch marks but considering the life cycle of women, they are more prone to get stretch marks. Also, with due respect to everyone it can be stated that there is more chance of a woman to go for treatments of stretch marks as compared to men. Major chunk of men tend to ignore stretch marks as they do not interfere with our day to day activities.

Treatment for Improving Skin Texture

Many pharmaceutical companies claim to help people get rid of stretch marks, and some stretch marks concealer creams really help- but not all. Some effective methods are discussed below

  • Peels which use papillary dermis-level chemexfoliation along with trichloracetic acid improve your skin texture and overall color with due course of time.
  • Laser treatment with UV-B irradiation also helps to reduce the variation between stretch marks and our normal skin tone.
  • Tretinoin which is related to vitamin A is also known to improve the texture and overall appearance of stretch marks scars.
  • Surgery for stretch marks (which are present from many years) is a good option but slightly on the expensive side.
  • Consulting a skin specialist (not a general physician as many people do) before taking any kind of a step, be it using creams or going for advance medical treatment is highly recommended.
  • There are many cosmetic surgeons who specialize in beautifying techniques which also includes getting away with stretch marks and even scars present for many years.

Some treatments require the person to be admitted to a hospital or a clinic for at least a couple of hours. You need to talk to your doctor for post treatment care. Still, the best solution is not to gain or reduce weight suddenly as preventative measures are easier than the embarrassment called stretch marks.
